Lukhanyo Hub

JCA have been appointed by RCDC to develop the Lukhanyo Hub master-plan with OKRA Landscape Architects, for a mixed use project serving the needs of the local community in Khayelitsha, a South African township near Cape Town, South Africa.

 

The project is being developed through the Resilient Neighbourhood Model (RNM), a system for sustainable development primarily in under-resourced contexts that seeks to meet urgent environmental and social challenges.

 

JCA, working with local South African architects 1 to1 Agency of Engagement, developed the brief through ongoing workshops and events with community, government and academics. The sports facilities, a security system and an urban agriculture training centre have already been implemented. The next phase will include a school and neighbourhood centre delivering early childhood development, education and health facilities with an expanded urban agriculture training centre. Vitally, a commercial space will provide a regeneration catalyst in the neighbourhood and the core part of the economic engine driving the hub. The Lukhanyo Hub project is the official government pilot project to develop this model, intended to be replicated across the Western Province.

 

The buildings are based around a core set of prefabricated elements. These will be customised on site to suit site conditions, climate and specific programme.
