Erlanger Road Pavilion

Designing and constructing pavilions offer the opportunity to create small, finely crafted structures that can act as a catalyst for new ideas and details that can inform our architecture.

With the Erlanger Road Theatre Pavilion the client, a south London playwright, wanted to create a place to work at home which could also extend to seasonal use of the garden.

The result was a playful structure, conceived as an inclined roof plane, following the natural fall of the garden.  The roof provides shelter to the stage and a structure from which to suspend swings, hammocks and theatre scenery sets.  The structure itself is constructed from glue laminated Siberian Larch and is dry jointed with interlocking timber details. During the summer, large pivoting glass doors can create a full width opening for performances and events. During winter, a wood burning stove heats the pavilion for year-round use.
